Ancient ideas concerning the compass points were combined with equally ancient ideas concerning right and left as well as the head and feet. The most obvious expression of this combination is the orientation of the body during sleep: in traditional Cambodia the head was to the south, the feet to the north, ostensibly in order for the right side of the body to be on the east.
