Etymological Dictionary
The Mon-Khmer Etymological Dictionary (MKED) provides:
  • comparative analysis of cognate terms across the full range of Mon-Khmer languages.

  • etymological reconstruction of proto-forms in Mon-Khmer and its branches.

  • comparison and citation of related terms, including both loans to and possible borrowing from other regional language families.
The core of the MKED is H.L. Shorto's Comparative Dictionary of the Mon-Khmer Languages.  Currently being readied for print publication by the Mon-Khmer Languages project, Shorto's work will be a major contribution to the field.  In preparation for decades before Shorto's death in 1995, it includes some 30,000 citations from nearly 250 languages.

The 'as-is' print edition of this immensely complex work is the only first phase of the project.  We will then extract, metatag, and relink all of the dictionary data, providing the framework of MKED.  At the same time, we will begin to add the Mon-Khmer Languages Database data. Ultimately, we expect to increase Shorto's original work by a factor of five to ten times.
