abstract = {Although Austronesian languages are known to be rich in reduplication processes, detailed study of reduplication in Formosan languages has so far been limited. This paper reports on the reduplication patterns in Thao, a severely endangered language spoken at Sun-Moon Lake in central Taiwan. Full reduplication marks repetitive/continuative verbal aspect, or intensity in adjectives, Ca- reduplication primarily marks instrumental nouns, and rightward (suffixed) reduplication has various other functions. These copying patterns are analyzed in terms of Optimality Theory, and two principal conclusions are reached: (1) the fixed vowel a in Ca- reduplication may be the default vowel in Thao, but this does not appear to be true for related languages that also make use of a similar reduplication pattern, and (2) the form of rightward reduplication can be stated unproblematically in segmental terms, but presents apparently insurmountable difficulties to a solution that appeals exclusively to prosodic units.},
