abstract = {The study of Chinese historical phonology is plagued by the fact that the Chinese script is non-alphabetic. To this is added the problem that detailed descriptions of pre-modern Chinese sound systems are rare. A most interesting treatment of seventeenth-century standard Mandarin is found in the Arte de la Lengua Mandarina, a grammar written by the Spanish Dominican, Francisco Varo. The present paper summarizes Varo's description and introduces his romanization system for early Qing Mandarin.},
