abstract = {This article is concerned with Papyrus Insinger 13/23 bn-iw n p nty ms irm rmt swg in p nty kr-db swg in and the two negatives in in it. Contending that no word in the sentence (especially grammatical morphemes) should be considered superfluous, it tries to establish that the only possible way to retain the two negatives in in the same sentence is to take the first one as the partner of bn-iw in the negative bn-iw... in (the negation of the nominal sentence in this case), while the second in is the negation of the prepositional phrase r-db swg "not because of stupidity". An exact translation of the sentence into English presents some difficulties and a paraphrase of it (suggested by Klaus Baer) will be: "It is not he who consorts with a fool who perishes (scil. as all men must sooner or later) for some other reason than his own stupidity." If in is indeed the negation of the prepositional phrase (an adverb) then that is the earliest known example-and the only one outside Coptic-of the independent use of in outside the combination bn... in, and it may be the earliest indication of the transition in the power of in and its development towards the status of an independent negative word an-as we know it in Coptic.},
