abstract = {The poetic tradition known as Jinling huaigu (Longing for the Past at Jinling) concentrates on celebrating or sorrowing over imperial Nanjing, the famous cultural center and capital seat of ten dynastic houses. Yet for a thousand years before, Nanjing-anciently called in succession Yecheng, Yuecheng, Jinlingyi, and Moling-was an important foundry on a strategic bend of the Yangzi River. This paper investigates both the historical countenance and literary image of pre-imperial Nanjing, or its development from foundry to fortress capital. We shall find that pre-imperial Nanjing, although occasionally treated in poetry, had little effect on the huaigu tradition; the main cultural heritage from this time is in the realm of toponyms.},
