  abstract = {The chan meters, introduced into Thai literature during the Ayutthaya period (1350-1767), are Indic meters which had their origin in Sanskrit and Pali counterparts. In Thai, these meters consist of a specific number of syllables designated as light and heavy. Thai literary critics have claimed that the poets working with the chan meters prior to the twentieth century were more concerned with achieving the required number of syllables per line than with observing the required light and heavy syllable arrangement. Because of this concern on the part of the poets, the critics maintain that the early chan compositions are filled with errors. This study investigates a group of poetic conventions that must be applied when reading or reciting the chan meters. When followed closely, these conventions demonstrate that the chan compositions regularly and systematically fulfill the light and heavy syllable requirements and that the compositions are not filled with errors.},
