abstract = {In RV III. l. 6 a series of paired oppositions (type 'not clothed (yet) not naked') is used to characterize the waters into which Agni has entered, but surprisingly the first pair-anadatir adabdhah-appears not to conform to this oppositional structure. This pair is usually translated 'not eating (yet) unharmable,' but even when adabdha- is rendered by its actual meaning 'undeceivable,' no satisfactory semantic opposition is achieved. A new morphological analysis of the first term, as a-nadant- rather than an-adant-, allows it to be equated with the Gathic Aves. hapax nadent- (Y. 33.4). The latter is usually translated 'scorning, slandering,' but this rests on an unlikely connection with Vedic nid 'scorn.' Analysis of the structure of the Avestan passage shows that, like Vedic anadant-, G. nadent- belongs to the realm of truth/falsehood. The two words then may be the sole survivors of an Indo-Iranian root *nad 'speak/perform falsely', or they may represent an early semantic specialization of the participle of the root found in Vedic as nad 'bellow.'},
