abstract = {This sketch of a Ryukyu dialect is largely concerned with problems of phonology and canonical shapes, including the entire inflectional morphology, since those are the features of Shodon that provide particularly valuable insights into the history of the Japanese language as a whole. Internal reconstructions are made explicit in the discussion of complex relationships between accentual and syllabic phenomena, as well as in the description of certain phonetic peculiarities such as the distinction between aspirated and unaspirated stops, final unreleased consonants, consonant clusters including geminate voiced stops, and two varieties of front vowels-the palatalizing type (here treated as /yi/ and /ye/) contrasting, after consonants only, with a retracted type (here treated as /i/ and /e).},
