abstract = {Macdonell's edition has been used by modern scholars as the standard text of the Brhaddevata for many years. The edition, however, contains a large number of superfluous lines, which Macdonell included in his text on his editorial principles. Aside from the later composite MSS, the other MSS of the Brhaddevata fall into two groups, representing a shorter and a longer recension. Macdonell concluded that the original size of the work was retained in the longer version, and that the shorter version was an abridgement of it. Thus he incorporated the lines peculiar to the longer version, occupying about one-sixth of the whole work, into his text. He was also convinced that the MS of the Haug collection was the closest to the original form of the work. Therefore he based the readings of his text mainly on this MS. A close examination of the groups of MSS, however, reveals that the longer version is a later amplification of the shorter version and that the MS of the Haug collection is one of the still later composite MSS. Consequently the original form of the work differs considerably both in size and in reading from Macdonell's text.},
