abstract = {The hypothesis of a Japanese-Austronesian genetic relationship is evaluated, using the traditional methodology of comparative linguistics, which emphasizes the importance of regular sound correspondences as the most important condition for establishing any kind of genetic relationship. The article concentrates on recent works by P. K. Benedict and T. Kawamoto, who actively support the idea of a Japanese-Austronesian relationship. The author comes to the conclusion that the principle of regular sound correspondences is not maintained in these works, and that therefore the hypothesis of a Japanese-Austronesian relationship has low credibility. Moreover, both Benedict and Kawamoto often use unreliable Japanese reconstructions, or tend to compare Proto-Austronesian with Old Japanese, rather than with Proto-Japanese. The author also examines the competing theory of an Altaic genetic affiliation for Japanese, and comes to the conclusion that it is more reliable than one with Austronesian.},
